too cute to ignore

Whew! It has been a long week. I am looking longingly at a cup of tea, my bed, and a book (for fifteen minutes until I fall asleep!)

Before I crash I wanted to share an etsy shop that I just found out about. Kikib is one of my oldest friends, and she has been creative and crafty since way before it was all the rage. A portion of everything she sells goes to a school in Madagascar, so while you are there check out the link to that site. She is a very cool gal and who doesn't need a onesie??

the days are numbered

In an earlier post I might have said something about my pending unemployment. Let me explain. The shop is closing. Our last day for business is April 6th. We had planned to be around through May, but things changed -- as they are prone to do -- and now we find ourselves in the midst of a massive "moving" sale.

The shop has been a great thing for me. A vision in pinks and oranges. It got me back into the world of regular, on-going work after my extended hiatus and it introduced me to a fantastic group of knitters. I am going to miss this job. As much as I will miss having a steady income, I am really going to miss the feeling of coming into this little oasis of aesthetic warmth and charm. It is a place to relax, where you can choose to slow things down. I found a couple of photos I took a few months back; one caught a glimpse of my camera-shy co-worker (and friend), Olia. She is a master knitter who has taught me tons of tips and can hold a darn good conversation about the French theorists; she is a true academic at heart. While there will always be yarn and needles, it is hard to find a place that connects people the way the Knit Cafe has shown me is possible.

I'm not sure what is next. Maybe a fellowship will come my way (no, I have not heard yet) or another job that feels like a good match. Olia and I have been joking about training for a marathon as a way to combat our unemployment depression. I'll let you know if this develops beyond an idea. To the many friends who ask us what we'll do now, we've taken to saying, "avocado mask. maybe followed by pedicures."

It's Easter Somewhere

Thank you for this, KT.
Here, Bunny Bunny. Come here, Bunny.

Any minute now, I expect the Easter Bunny to start hiding eggs around the apartment. While I wait to find the eggs, I am knitting bunny ear hats for some of my favorite babies. Welcome to the world, Roy (pronounced Roo'ee)!

Just in case the bunny forgets to bring candy, rest assured, we'll be fine.

Pat and Susan have made sure that Orion will not have any of his original teeth by the time he is 35. In the meantime, he is LOVING it!! Word is that the malted milk eggs -- "Fiesta Eggs" -- are on their way from Iowa (the only place that sells these puppies). For those of you in Iowa: don't miss out on this delicacy.

And a last thought before the holiday is upon us -- Peeps! Thanks to Jackie who sent me to go find the Washington Post Peeps Diorama Contest: Peeps Show II. It is freaking amazing! I did notice that my http://www.blogger.com/img/gl.link.gifprevious post was not part of this contest. Evidently it is still in a league all of its own. Who knew that there were 800 (!!) submissions this year?! Now I know what I can do pass th time once unemployment in upon me in a couple of weeks. Sweet!

and Joyce also tipped me off to the Chicago Tribune Peeps Diorama submissions. Then I wandered into last year's Seattle Times submissions -- FYI, Seattle is unveiling this year's best on April 8, in the Northwest Life section. Lest I forget to mention that there is the Denver Post... The more I googled, the more I found. While my teeth are starting to hurt just looking at all the dioramas, I would like to point out that the regional politics expressed through sugary delight are pretty interesting.

favorite things

I have spring on the brain. Everyday I watch for signs of new life among my potted friends. Things planted from seeds are slow-to-grow, which might explain why I can't remember the last time I tried to grow from seeds. huh. While those seeds are still being shy, I was greeted by these brightly smelling buds. Not the dafodils I was waiting for, but I'll take 'em.

When Lexi was here for a visit/"writing intensive" -- there are pictures somewhere around here -- I found this bird mobile. Long ago Margery told me to put a mobile over my desk and I would finish my dissertation. The mobile is up and now I am waiting, er, writing. You can't really tell, but the pieces are cut from wood with this great grain.

This would be my new favorite thing if not for this next item....

Ok, now for the big finish ---- ta da! a giant hippo rug from MOCA! I'm not sure who could pass this up to be honest. I had my eye on this beauty for months, until it was the last one and I could barter for the floor model. Ah the things that traveling abroad teaches you. good stuff.

A garden from Sofia

I got the best present in the mail this week. A garden in full bloom! Who could ask for anything better? Thanks, Sofia.
Orion wanted me to be sure to tell you that we had lots of tape. Phew!

As you can see, our deer likes the flowers too. We hung them up high enough so that she can't eat any of them, only look at them and enjoy the colors.

To answer your questions, Sofia, I do like beans. Right now I really like eating green beans, especially the skinny kind. I like candy, but not as much as Orion. He LOVES candy!! We both like popsicles and bananas. I am not sure if I have ever had a banana popsicle, but maybe I can try one when I come to visit you in NC. Orion says he has tried a banana popsicle but that cherry is still his favorite. I love you too. Give your mom and dad big hugs for me. Thank you again for the collage, it is beautiful!!

xxx...no, seriously

Now this is not for all eyes.
Please use your best judgment in who you decide to share this with.
It came to me from my baby bro, who after seeing this I know is a "baby" no longer.
We grew up in a household where Peeps -- the sugary, marshmellow-y treat -- were a regular fixture this time of the year. No one especially liked them, and I'm not sure who ate them, but I cannot remember and Easter without them.
For Easter this year I sent a book all about Peeps to my parents. Evidently there are recipes designed around the cavity-inducing sweets.
I knew that they were photogenic, but I was not prepared for this image.

You may never be able to look at Peeps the same.
I know that I won't.

housekeeping

It is spring in Los Angeles. Even though the winters here are neither long nor rough, spring still feels great. I noticed it when I would leave work and it was still light out at six o'clock. Then I would wake up and the air through the open windows would smell like flowers. That might be my new favorite thing.

I went back to yoga in the canyon, and it feels good to be lying under the trees again. This is still one of my favorite things about living here. More on this later.

Just as I feel compelled to clean the apartment, I am also feeling like I need to clear out all of my old, delayed, and partially finished blog posts. As you can see, there was an Oscars post that has only recently made it onto the blog (despite what the date says). For weeks it has been sitting in "edit"-limbo. This post is not alone. There is one from my birthday...xmas in January...the Iowa cousins' visit...our celebrity new years.......Yikes! If things seem a bit out-of-season, don't worry it's not you. Bear with me and I'll do what I can to re-engage the four of you who are reading!

These beautiful tulips are from Orion.....on valentine's day.
This is what I am talkin' about?

80 Years!

It is that time of year again -- as if there is anyone who doesn't know that the Academy Awards are happening! Maybe I am biased because I live in tinseltown and have helicopters doing laps overhead for hours already. I have actually been trying to write and get some work done. The goal is to take less than 80 years to finish my PhD(!!) heh heh.

I am ready to take a break from grant writing and spend some time on the couch with Miriam and watch the 80th Academy Awards. For the first time in years I am not taping the show for later discourse analysis. Maybe I am turning over a new leaf??

Long before Barbara sent them to Oprah, Orion was in line at Sprinkles, our favorite little cupcake shop. In honor of the special event, Sprinkles has made an Oscars cupcake -- red velvet with a gold star -- super cute.
Go Sprinkles!

happy heart day

Happy Valentine's Day
This is the heart I made O for valentine's day. I got sick and haven't been back to work, so he'll have to wait to get his surprise, but this way it can stay in the shop and amuse other knitters. xoxoxo

Is it always like this?

I am sick.
O was sick last week and I have been in bed since Thursday.
For the first time in days I am out of bed. Worry is an incredible motivator.
This morning I am heading in to see my doctor and put to rest my fears that this is a more serious illness than every other flu that has come before. Because of the APS I am more aware of acute chest pain, or how long a headache is lasting. It's hard not being able to drown my body's complaints with Advil, or take DayQuil and power through. Not that powering through is an option right now (cough, cough).
I am too sick to knit.
With the pervasive possibility that it could be something "serious", my goal is to keep my imagination in check and avoid losing a day to the ER. Lately I have been thinking about how there has to be a down-side to all of the CTs, MRIs, and x-rays. Even a little radiation can't be great for the body, right?
I owe a lot of phone calls. I know it, you know it, it'll happen.
Carrie, sorry I couldn't talk last night.
Lexi, thanks for the "there, there"s; they helped.

Obey

There is energy happening. Yesterday I could feel it more palpably. The outcomes last night felt kind of anti-climactic, but I am still hopeful. I am really enjoying the art that is coming out in response to the political activity. Keep it comin'!

Props to Shepard Fairey for continuing to put out images that are both lovely and public. On the Obey site there is a version that can be downloaded for guerrilla posting.

note to brandy: it is either political inspiration or dissertation procrastination that has brought me back to the blog. in either case, i missed you too :)

Yes We Can Obama Song by will.i.am

I know this has been going around, but it looks like the site might be down...not the worst thing if it means more hits than it can handle, eh? Orion always has good things to say about will.i.am

When I went to my polling place I was able to vote with Stevie Wonder(!!) and visit with neighbors. I do live in Los Angeles; I have neighbors who I see when I go to vote. Please remind someone you know in a Super Tuesday state to go vote.

I'm still here

I guess I have some explaining to do since I have been silent for so long. It is the fall, and I feel like time always speeds up in the fall. This is also the time of year when I am most motivated to take things on (i.e., I am easily distracted by new projects and busy trying to make headway on tasks that have been hanging around for a while). Fall is my time of change. Maybe it comes from years of living by an academic calendar and looking to fall as the time to buy new notebooks and get a fresh start. It is when I start new jobs. It is when I simultaneously start making plans to travel and wanting to nest and stay close to home. It is even when my health, the biggest factor in my life the past couple of years, changed radically. This fall we have had visitors from our "homes", Nadia and John D. represented Portland and Iowa City, respectively, and there really is nothing better than getting to see old friends. My lil bro made the move south to start grad school at UCLA, and I have to say that I am thrilled to have him in the same city.

So true to form, I started a new job at the sweetest knitting shop imaginable, the Knit Cafe. I am there part-time so that I can still work on my dissertation, and it is allowing me to get back into shape for the world of work. It is also part of my holistic effort to finally *move* to Los Angeles. For the handful of you that read this, I think I have talked to you about my decision to shift my thinking about living in la la land. Since I arrived with an ethnographic orientation, I never really went through the process of relocating to SoCal with an intent to be here for the long term. Life intervened, as it so often does, and I finally figured out that I need to change the way I think about being here. Part of that is accepting a job without a fixed end-date; prior I felt the need to know that there was a foreseeable "end" in sight. My plants are also happy that they can be re-potted, and I might just find time to paint the bedroom. After all, I might be here a while!

I Love Ellen.

I know I have a glut of backlogged posts that at this rate may never see the light of day, but all I want to write about is Ellen Degeneres.
If you don't know, I got hooked on daytime tv when I was sick/recovering and spending a lot of time on the couch. Today I was cleaning in preparation for Nadia's arrival this evening and I had Ellen (the show) on to keep me company.

If you haven't heard, it ended up being an unusual show this afternoon. Ellen took the opening monologue time to give a tear-filled explanation of why she was having a crummy day. Ends up she is involved in a messy situation surrounding a rescue dog. Needless to say, I found myself on the couch still wearing yellow rubber gloves and holding a sponge: watching. There is the curiosity factor that is a draw whenever someone who is a public figure does something totally uncharacteristic in a very public way (after all if the world was ending I figured I'd rather hear it from Ellen than the local news guy anyway). Besides the curiosity that drew me out of the bathroom mid-scrub, I also had this crazy feeling that I should support Ellen by watching. I'm not sure I can explain it better than that. She is a part of Hollywood, this system and industry that spends so much energy trying to keep up appearances, that for someone to go against the grain and behave in a normal way (i.e., having a bad day and being upset about something) is a really big deal. It wasn't a publicity stunt or a practical joke. It was a sincere show of distress and a direct address of what it takes to do a show when you have other things on you mind and your heart. All this is to say that it left an impression and I have a lot of respect for Ellen Degeneres. **Also because then she went on the host a couple and their eight kids (6 yr old twins and 6 2-yr olds). heh heh.

When I started writing this there wasn't anything on YouTube yet, but I have since found a clip on TMZ; if you are interested in seeing part what happened you can check it out there. TMZ has sponsor ads, so sorry about that. From my brief googling it looks like her moment as a regular person is getting plenty of coverage. Maybe that was the goal and the hope is that her public plea gets the situation sorted out. In any event, it struck a cord in me and I felt compelled to spend a few minutes writing about it and thinking about the impact atypical celeb behavior can have.

Did you know?

There is a ton of stuff that I don't know about in the world o' blogs, so periodically I do a little research on what I am missing.

If you are looking for another way to pass the time, this is it: BloggerPlay.

I guess it should not be a surprise that everything uploaded or posted somewhere, then floats around in cyberspace being consumed in all kinds of ways I never imagined. Blogger explains in their blog that they used to just run all the uploaded photos in the office, but then word spread and now it is public.

It is mesmerizing. Since it is posted from all over the world the range of images is kind of amazing. I am just waiting to see someone familiar!

good things come...

...to those who wait.
Thanks for being patient, Jackie. And thanks to my knitting gals for waiting on the photos of this project. I have yet to see the top on her, but I am hopeful that it fits. Jackie?

I took detail pictures that wouldn't give it away, but since Jackie has had her birthday sweater in hand for weeks already, I can reveal it (after a little teasing!)

ok, very little teasing. Here it is ----

ta-da! This is a Knitty pattern: "soleil". I used a hemp/cotton/modal by elsebeth lavold, Hempathy, that I picked up in Ames, Iowa. Jackie was with me at the time, so the project was intended for her from the beginning. The color makes me think of Iowa, as does Ms. JMC.

That's it for the moment. I have embarked on a knit blanket in a log cabin quilt pattern. I'll let you know how it turns out. Queen Bee, I'll try to remember to take a picture for you so you can see where I am headed. Just haven't done it yet. There is also another baby sweater around here somewhere now that I am thinking about it...hmmmmm? And then there is the skirt I was working on during the Iowa visit; not sure if there will be a photo pf that one. heh.

Props to Amoeba

Since I am on a Kanye West kick I figure I'll like to this clip of him on Jimmy Kimmel giving props to Amoeba. He also talks about Murakami. Brandy inspired me to play around with YouTube. Thaks, Bran!

at last!

It is raining in the City of Angels. We have been heading towards the driest year ever with less than 2.5 inches this year. In the desert water makes all the difference, and being an Oregonian I have been missing the rain something awful. I love the sound and the smell and the cool that comes with the rain. It is not an Iowa thunderstorm, but it'll do.

Today was a good day. Orion and I got to attend a Kanye West performance for Power 106 (LA radio) in Long Beach. The link will take you to the podcast of the interview. Kanye's show was well worth the trip south, and his website is worth checking out.

Takashi Murakami did the cover art, which is just one more reason to seek out the album. I love his work. He has a show coming to MOCA this fall and that alone was reason to renew my membership. Go art!

Even if you are not a big hip hop fan, it is an album worth giving a listen.

To wrap up a great day I found this layer cake at BLD that is to die for. Who doesn't love cake?
Rain and cake. mmmmmmmmmm.

a perfect hollywood day

The Emmy Awards left me smiling.
The sun was shining, I got to work with some familiar faces that it was good to see again, and for once I took a credential photo I was willing to show.
It was great, couldn't have been better, and I even had some fun amidst all of the hubbub. For this show I was in a new position within the talent department -- still on the red carpet during the arrivals -- but this time I was the spotter as everyone arrives. It has the potential to be a tough job; it requires that I correctly identify all of the nominees, presenters, and performers. That's eleven pages of names in a small font. All I can say is that there was a reason I watched all that tv in 2006/07!

Even with the help of my great asst. Jeanne, the security guard who claimed to only know Seinfeld and then came through in a pinch with Joey Fatone, and a couple of rouge publicists, there was never a moment to check the state of my sunburn or put down my clipboard, let alone take pictures (which would also have been highly illegal from where I was standing, and therefore not something I would ever, ever do). I will give you a glimpse into the glamour of a production office. My girl T. looks great even after a long day.

Somewhere I do have other shots. Once I get them transfered off of my phone I'll put them up (just for you, Bran!) The Emmy red carpet is much more compact than the one at the Oscars. There are more people in attendance, more nominees, and in my case, more names to know. If you want you can check out one of my study guides feel free; it doesn't have every category, nor does it have the presenters (...the cast of the Sopranos!!), but it does have photos, which was a plus.

Regarding who I saw -- everyone. Literally everyone who attended that entered on the red carpet. Many went by in a blur to be honest, and after a while I was in a zone where my brain would go: "Anna Paquin. Minnie Driver -- nice dress! Felcity Huffman. William H. Macy. Mary Louise Parker -- love her. not Doogie Howser, not Doogie Howser...Neil Patrick Harris! (Phew!)"

It used to be said that the Emmys was known for turning out fashion disasters, but it looked to me like just about everyone has found a stylist. At some point I decided to only say nice things and mention the people who looked great. Karma and everything. There are plenty of blogs out there to trash anyone and everyone, if that's what you are into. On a positive note... Tina Fey looked great. Helen Mirren looked even better than at the Oscars -- and I thought she was stunning there! Marcia Cross is taller than I expected. Heidi Klum shows no signs of ever having been pregnant(!) It was hard not to ask the Top Chef cast "Who wins?!" The entire cast of Grey's Anatomy is quite attractive (including one young actor who I knew during MA research before he became a Mc...) It was sort of crazy to *meet* Al Gore in this context, and I never did see what role Kanye West ended up playing in the ceremony. hmmm? BTW his new album is really good. Masi Oka and James Lee, from Heroes were as nice as one could hope. And what can I say, Jon Stewart is darlin'.

In case you weren't aware, the Emmy Awards went green (as have all the award shows it seems). While the carpet was made of recycled plastics, there was no shortage of energy when it came to making the bars at the Governor's Ball out of ice. They were pretty cool (pardon the pun) and Grey Goose to boot!
